Q1 / Q4
Quarterly
Project Updates
In the first quarter, the team successfully completed Pilot Study 1, focusing on site exploration, stakeholder engagement, and pre-testing of research tools in the villages of Musoma and Rukala.
Key findings revealed the lack of dams, poor infrastructure, and community concerns that dam extensions could worsen flooding in Rukala, guiding the refinement of research tools for Pilot Study 2.
The project adhered to ethical standards, secured NACOSTI approval, and established a foundation for comprehensive data collection in the second quarter.

Short description of the project:
Budalangi, a region along the banks of the Nzoia River, has experienced recurring floods for decades. This student-led research project seeks to identify the causes, impacts, and gaps in the current flood management system. By combining scientific analysis with local knowledge, it aims to develop innovative, practical solutions that better protect vulnerable communities.
Investigation of historical and current flood events in Budalangi
Identification of systemic weaknesses in existing risk management
Development of participatory strategies with the affected local communities
The results are intended to provide concrete input for policy-making processes, with the goal of strengthening long-term resilience to climate impacts.
