Q3 / Q4

Quarterly

Project Updates

In the first quarter, the team successfully completed Pilot Study 1, focusing on site exploration, stakeholder engagement, and pre-testing of research tools in the villages of Musoma and Rukala.

  • Key findings revealed the lack of dams, poor infrastructure, and community concerns that dam extensions could worsen flooding in Rukala, guiding the refinement of research tools for Pilot Study 2.

  • The project adhered to ethical standards, secured NACOSTI approval, and established a foundation for comprehensive data collection in the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the team successfully conducted Field Study One and Two in the villages of Rukala and Musoma, completing comprehensive data collection.

  • A total of 182 household questionnaires were administered (98.35% response rate), alongside 10 key informant interviews and 28 focus group participants. Systematic field observations were also carried out to document infrastructure conditions, drainage systems, and flood-prone sites.

  • Key findings indicate that recurrent flooding in Budalangi is driven by its geographical location (confluence of the Nzoia and Yala rivers), sediment accumulation, upstream deforestation, structural weaknesses in flood control systems, and increasing climate variability

  • Despite logistical and health-related challenges — including prolonged flooding and a malaria case — all planned activities were completed, resulting in a fully verified dataset ready for in-depth analysis in the next quarter
